Cape Lookout Lighthouse & National Seashore

Cape Lookout National Seashore - Attractions, Activities & MoreThe islands of Cape Lookout stretch 56 miles of undeveloped beach stretched over 4 barrier islands from Ocracoke to Beaufort Inlet.  Just a one hour drive from Emerald Isle through Morehead City, Beaufort and into Down East will bring you to a wide variety of ferry docks. Take a day trip 3 miles off-shore to beautiful remote beaches to relax, renew, and re-energize along the secluded shores.   Watch wild horses and other wildlife frolick along the white sands and green marshes. Spectacular shelling up and down the beaches.  Be sure to pack your shell bag as you won't be able to choose just one!  Camping is permitted in designated areas of the seashore.  Pack your fishing pole and Saltwater Fishing License to prepare for a memorous catch of the day.  Visit the Historic District of the seashore to learn more about the history of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the old fishing village that once resided there.

Gather your provisions prior to getting to the ferry docks, including trash bags, water, picnic lunch, and any other items needed for your day trip.  Wear comfortable clothing and be aware of the climate depending on when you are planning to visit.  Keep in mind you must take back everything you bring since there are no trash receptacles on the island.  Visiting in the summer?  Don't forget your bug repellent as the islands maritime areas can be buggy during the humid season.  Bathroom and picnic facilities are available as well as a tours of the island through our activity vendors.  Check the Lighthouse calendar to find out if lighthouse tours are offered when you are vacationing.  Authorized passenger ferry service is available from the waterfronts at Morehead City, Beaufort and Harkers Island.  You may contact our Activities Department to find out about special ferry discounts available from our activity vendors.
