Croatan Forest Recreation Area
Croatan National Forest Recreation Area offers boating on the White Oak River, nature trails, wildlife, hiking, hunting, camping, swimming, wildflowers and bird watching. The 161,000 acres of land offer an exciting variety of activities and adventures. The forest is also home to the endangered red-cockaaded woodpeckers and the Venus flytrap, which can only be found in the eastern coastal plain. The Croatan is defined by water, bordered by tidal rivers and the Bogue Sound. Catfish and Great lakes as well as other freshwater lakes are in the forest's center.
